The NPORS Cat & Genny training course addresses both the theory and practical aspects of safely using a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) and Signal Generator (Genny).
Students will be taught essentials on how to use the equipment before a practical element where they will be shown how to correctly trace and mark underground service lines with the NPORS test at the end.
To complete the course you need a CITB Health Safety and Environment test (known as the touch screen test) dated within the last 2 years.

Demonstrate a basic understanding of the industry and their roles and responsibilities
Demonstrate an understanding of the relevant regulations, standards and legislation
Identify services on plans for water, gas, electricity and telecommunications
Survey a site for visual indications of services being present
Point out on the ground where services are, in relation to the plans
Identify damage to samples of different types of underground apparatus
Demonstrate an understanding of the risks and implications of damaged underground apparatus
Conduct all pre-operation checks
Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
Correctly use the equipment to scan an area for underground apparatus and record the findings
Mark the site clearly to show the location of underground apparatus
Correctly clean equipment, remove the battery pack and stow away

NPORS Cat & Genny Training Course Assessment
Candidates will take a verbal theory test, and complete a practical assessment. Successful candidates will receive a NPORS Operator Card which lasts for 3 years.
To maintain your card and registration with NPORS, operators are advised to complete a 1 Day NPORS Refresher Course every 3 years.
Who Should Attend?
This NPORS Cat & Genny training course is beneficial to anyone involved in work associated with excavation. This includes individuals employed in construction and utility maintenance that are looking to obtain their NPORS Operator Card.

After booking your course please let us know if you require the NPORS/CSCS Card (required for construction industry) or the traditional NPORS card (suitable for sectors other than construction).
For entrants that wish to apply for the NPORS Traditional Card, there is no requirement to do an NVQ qualification.
All operators who require the NPORS/CSCS card must have completed the CSCS HSE Operatives touch screen test within the last 2 years.

When will my certificate be issued?
On successful completion of the course candidates will receive a certificate of attendance.
When will I receive my joining instructions?
You will receive course joining instructions 7 to 10 days prior to course commencement. If you book within this 7 to 10 time period then your joining instructions are emailed within 24 hours of when your booking was placed.
What time does the course start?
Start and finish times are confirmed on your joining instructions.
What happens if I don't pass the course?
In the unlikely event you fail the course our team will contact you to discuss your options. We won't leave you high and dry, we'll find the best way for you to achieve the qualification required in the quickest way possible.
